Decision-making is a key part of any career, but sometimes there are no clear-cut right or wrong choices – there’s only what’s right for you.
And that can be a bear to figure out.
I’ve had interesting experiences with unexpected signs.
For example, one early summer morning I set out for a run and noticed that a city construction crew had started doing some roadwork on my street. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; in Wisconsin we’re used to the fact that we have two seasons – winter and road construction.
But the problem was that the city crew had, for no apparent reason, parked an empty trailer in front of the driveway to the parking lot where I park my car.
This meant no one could get in or out and I was working myself into a fine snit over it all as I ran along. I was trying out all kinds of Angry Citizen lines in my head. Eventually I passed the local elementary school and noticed that someone had picked up a long lost glove and stuck it on a fence post, perhaps hoping that the owner would find it before too long.
But what was unusual was that this anonymous glove-finder had twisted the fingers into a peace sign.
It was like the Universe had told me to chill out.
I got a hold of myself, realized there was no reason to get mad at anyone and finished my run.
By the time I got home, the trailer was moved out of the way.
Just to reassure you, I’m not insane and I don’t really think there was any kind of cause and effect relationship with all these events.
All the same, I’m glad I was paying attention and noticed things that helped me take action more in keeping with what I like to think of as my genuine self.
Isn’t that what we all want to do when we’re making decisions about our careers? Trouble is, we can’t count on directional signals from the Great Beyond to tell us what to do.
But maybe we can watch for signs, like lost gloves, license plates spelling out keywords and interesting shaped clouds. These indicators don’t mean anything, of course, but the way we interpret them does. When we ascribe meaning to random events we just might be connecting with our unconscious, and that can give us insight into what our hearts are truly seeking.
You could also flip a coin. You won’t get any more valuable information, but in that instant before you know whether it’s heads or tails, if you find yourself rooting for one or the other, you’ll have discovered what your choice was all along.
